The Refractory Bricks Raw Materials Compositions
The raw materials of silicon carbide bricks are silicon carbide. Silicon carbide is also called the moissanite, corundum sand or refractory sand. It is made by quartz sand, petroleum coke or coal tar, and wood bits, being produced by high temperature smelting in the electric resistance furnace. In general, SiC has excellent oxidation resistance up to 1650°C.
So silicon carbide bricks are a kind of refractory materials manufactured with silicon carbide as the main raw material, which cover 72%~99% SiC content. Generally, silicon carbide bricks are made from SiC granule, SiC powder and binding agent through compounding, mixing, molding, and firing.

Silicon carbide bricks have a wide range of applications, which are mainly used as ceramic slabs, heat insulation boards, push boards, and lining materials for waste incinerators, as well as linings and copper flow tanks for the non-ferrous metallurgical industry. The uses of silicon carbide bricks are as follows:
1. Non-ferrous metal smelting industry, ceramic, enamel and cement rotary kiln mouth, as well as glass annealing furnace and various kind of high temperature furnace.
2. Blast furnace lining,the lining of aluminium electrolytic bath, glass tank, structural ceramics, sanitary ceramics, domestic ceramics, electrotechnical porcelain refractory material, sinter powder metal industry. 4. Chemical use- Because silicon carbide can be in molten steel and react with metal oxides in molten steel to form carbon monoxide and silicon-containing slag. So it can be used as a smelting steel purifier. However, this generally uses pure low-degree silicon carbide to reduce costs. At the same time, it can also be used as a raw material for manufacturing silicon tetrachloride.
Silicon Carbide Refractories Manufacturing Process
A total of three steps are required to produce silicon carbide bricks.
Firstly, the processed silicon carbide aggregate and silicon carbide fine powder are proportioned according to a certain ratio before producing silicon carbide bricks, and then they are uniformly mixed with the colloidal graphite in the porcelain ball mill for 20 hours, and the binder Lin methyl cellulose or alcohol solution of polyvinyl alcohol is added.
Secondly, silicon carbide brick is formed into a brick in a steel mold with a pressure of 50~70mpa.
Lastly, silicon carbide brick is sintered at a high temperature after drying.
The Refractory Bricks Classifications
Silicon carbide refractories have lots of different types, but the clay-bonded silicon carbide brick, Si3N4 bonded silicon carbide brick and recrystallized silicon carbide brick are the three most commonly used bricks.
Clay-Bonded Silicon Carbide Brick
Clay-bonded silicon carbide brick is made of silicon carbide as the main raw material and clay as a binder. It is featured with high thermal conductivity, small thermal expansion coefficient, good thermal shock resistance and wear resistance, and is one of the earliest developed among silicon carbide bricks. It can be used as ceramic kiln, muffle hoods for muffle furnaces, lining brick for aluminum refining furnace, distillation tank for zinc distillation furnaces, cement rotary kiln cooler and so on.
Si3N4 Bonded Silicon Carbide Brick
Si3N4 bonded silicon carbide brick is a kind of refractory product which is sintered by nitriding using SiC and Si powder as raw materials. Nitride Bonded Silicon Carbide Brick is characterized by Si3N4 as the binding phase. Si3N4 is an important new refractory material in the form of acicular or fibrous crystals existing in SiC grains. Si3N4 bonded silicon carbide bricks have good alkali corrosion resistance, resistance to melting cryolite, oxidation resistance, wear resistance, high thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance and extremely low electrical conductivity.
Therefore, Nitride Bonded Silicon Carbide Brick is mainly used as the inner lining of the lower furnace body,which can improve the service life of furnace. In addition, it can be used as aluminum reduction electrolytic cell lining and ceramic kiln furniture, which has the advantages of energy saving, improving service life and no polluting the environment. Recrystallized Silicon Carbide Brick
Recrystallized silicon carbide brick is a refractory product in which silicon carbide and silicon carbide are directly combined. It is characterized by the absence of a second phase and consists of 100% α-SiC.
Recrystallized silicon carbide products are mainly used as kiln furniture, which has the advantages of energy saving, increasing the effective volume of the kiln, shortening the firing cycle, improving the production efficiency of the kiln, and high economic efficiency.
